  The detection time of certain drug metabolites like THC in a hair test is far greater than that of a urine test or a saliva test.  For just a one time use the drug metabolite can be processed out of your blood, urine or saliva in just a few days, weeks or even up to a month depending on the substance.  In the blood, urine or saliva the metabolites are processed out of your system by the liver and the kidneys.  Not so with the hair.  Your hair is a dead element which sits outside of the body and has no filtration system.  Once the metabolites are deposited in the hair follicle they grow along the trajectory of the hair until they are physically removed by cutting the follicle.  After your blood is clean then any new hair growth will be clean as well.

  A typical hair test will check for the five most commonly used illegal substances.  They are marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP and amphetamines (methamphetamines/ecstasy).  Because most illegal drugs besides marijuana can be out of your system in a few weeks hair testing is a more accurate diagnosis of your intake over a longer period of time.  In referring to drugs being “out of your system” this means that they can no longer be detected in urine tests, saliva tests or even blood tests after a few weeks for a single use or a small dosage.

• Hair Follicle Testing: What You Need To Know

  There are various cut off levels for different drugs.  The cutoff levels are the concentration of drug metabolites discovered during the hair test.  For example, the cutoff level for amphetamines in the hair is 500 picograms per milligram.  For cocaine it is also 500 picograms per milligram.  For opiates the cutoff level would be 300 picograms per milligram. PCP is also 300 picograms per milligram. Marijuana (THC) is 1 picogram per milligram.

  There is a chain of custody documentation when it comes to a hair test.  This means that your employer can not just cut your hair and test it themselves.  An independent lab will take the sample from any person required to take the hair test.  This chain of custody also means that the person providing the hair sample can not just walk in to the testing facility with the hair sample already removed from their body.  Who knows, they could have taken the sample from their child or even the family dog.  This is why the chain of custody is so important as to weed out any contamination or substitutions.

  It generally takes anywhere from two to four days to obtain the results of your hair test.  The initial test is a radioimmunoassay test and if results are negative then they are usually available within three days.  If the results are positive after the initial test then a secondary examination is performed.  This secondary test is a confirmatory test through a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry test to provide a conclusive result and to assure that the sample was not a false positive for another substance whose characteristics are similar to illegal drugs.

• Hair Follicle Testing: What You Need To Know

  As the blood flows into the hair follicle the toxins, such as the THC metabolites are carried along with the blood flow.  As your hair grows the toxins follow along that trajectory but never leave the follicle until they are cut out.  As long as there are toxins in your blood there will be toxins flowing into your hair.  When your blood is finally clean then any new hair growth will be clean.  When you take a hair test the drug levels are measured by the drug molecules imbedded inside the hair follicle. Only the inside of the follicle is tested so the sample can not be contaminated by any external substances on the outside of the hair follicle.  The sample is thoroughly washed before it is tested.

  The hair test measures the toxin levels of any drug or toxin in a unit measure called a picogram.  A picogram is one trillionth of a gram. That is a very small unit of measure but luckily the cutoff levels for certain drugs are any where from 1 pg/mg of hair for marijuana to 500 pg/mg of hair for cocaine.

  The testing facility collects about one hundred milligrams of hair.  This is about ninety to one hundred strands of hair or about the thickness of the tip of a shoelace.  They cut as close to the scalp as they can as this is the timeline by which they base their analysis.  The hair in the human head grows approximately one half inch per month on average.  The testing facilities normally try to get a sample that is about one and a half inches long as this would be equivalent to ninety days of hair growth and ninety days of activity.

• Hair Follicle Testing: What You Need To Know

  Most hair follicle tests are only given for parole or custody cases or for highly sensitive jobs but they are becoming more common for pre employment drug testing all the time.  Hair tests are gaining in popularity because they are harder to pass and can provide a more accurate portrayal of the substances ingested by the person that is being tested over the previous three months. The ninety day timeline is derived from the average rate of hair growth on the human head.  Your hair grows approximately one half inch per month and the testers normally take an inch and a half follicle length from the scalp.

  If you think that you are going to get your hair cut to about a quarter inch of hair on your head and pass the test because your hair is too short then think again.  The testing facility will take a sample from your armpits or chest hair (for men) or they may give you a blood test.  The hair follicle has many layers and the metabolites from the drugs ingested are detected in the cortex of the follicle. The outer layer of the hair follicle shaft is known as the cuticle.  Inside the cuticle is the cortex and inside the cortex is the medulla.  Toxins, like THC metabolites will be stored in the cortex of your hair follicle.

  There is constant blood flow into the hair follicle but no blood flow out of the follicle.
