  -          Hi, do you give directions? I hope I called a right place… I have to pass a drug test, and obviously I cannot so it on my own, so I need something that is going to help me. I have been doing some research for the last a couple of days, but the more I look into it, the more I get confused. Can you explain to me the whole process? What are the proportions for the Drano and Visine?

  When you apply for a job and you are asked to pass a drug test the consequences of failing the drug test are pretty simple: you don’t get the job.  When you are required to pass a drug test for probation the consequences are much more severe: usually it is jail time.

  A pre employment urine drug screen has a standard set of cut off levels for each substance.  A cutoff level is the minimum concentration of drugs or drug metabolites present in the specimen before the lab will reach a determination that the sample is positive for a certain drug.  Each drug has a different cutoff level. For marijuana that cut off level would be fifty nanograms per milliliter.  For cocaine it would be one hundred and fifty nanograms per milliliter and so on for different drugs.  These cutoff levels are pretty much universally accepted and anything below these levels would be a negative result on the test.

  Probationary drug tests have a whole different set of criteria.  The cut off levels for substances for someone on probation vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and substance to substance.  Most of the time there will be a zero tolerance for all substances.  Some jurisdictions may have a cutoff level of twenty nanograms or fifteen nanograms for THC.  There will be some jurisdictions that will fail the person being tested if the creatine level or specific gravity in the sample is too low.  This is what is known as a diluted sample and the courts may take this as an attempt to tamper with the results of the test and fail the person.

• Hair Follicle Drug Test

  We get a lot of calls from very anxious customers who are very afraid they cannot pass their hair drug test or have to pass a saliva drug test or urine drug test.   During the hair drug test procedure, a minimum inch and a half long hair sample is clipped from the back of the head near the scalp by the examiner. This allows the test to reveal a minimum 90 day drug history.  If the scalp hair is shorter than an inch and a half long, the examiner may look for other areas on the body to take a suitable sample. Body hair grows much slower then scalp hair so a smaller sample can be taken, this will also allow the test to reveal drug history much further than 90 days. • Drug Detection Time: Cocaine in the Urine

  The average time that cocaine can be detected in the urine for a single use and a person who is of average weight around one hundred and fifty pounds is anywhere from two to seven days.  That is to say the detection time will vary depending on such factors as the amount of cocaine used, the frequency of the use of the drug, (chronic users will have the cocaine metabolites detectable in the urine for a much longer time) the person’s body weight and metabolism, the pH levels and concentration of the urine sample, or even such rare conditions as a kidney disease or kidney infection.  The cutoff level for cocaine metabolites in a urine drug test is one hundred and fifty nanograms per milliliter.  Anything above this level can be declared as a positive use of cocaine.  A level that has been found to be below one hundred and fifty nanograms per milliliter can be declared as a negative for cocaine use.  However, test performed for probationary purposes may have a zero tolerance level for cocaine metabolites, or zero nanograms per milliliter.  Some tests may have a lower tolerance as well.  For example, highly sensitive employment opportunities may have a lower tolerance level than the one hundred and fifty nanograms per milliliter that is the standard.  There are certain substances that can be construed as a false positive for cocaine use. Amoxicillin and some other antibiotics can provide a false positive for cocaine use.  Sometime a person who suffers from liver disease, kidney disease or diabetes can receive a positive result for cocaine use in a urine test.

• Drug Detection Time: Amphetamines in the Saliva

  Determining amphetamine use by saliva testing has a much shorter window of detection time that detecting the use of amphetamines with a urine test.  The saliva test for amphetamines is mainly conducted to determine a very recent use of the drug and will not determine any long term use.

  On average for a single use of amphetamines the saliva test can only detect the presence of amphetamines for up to 72 hours.  The cutoff level for the presence of amphetamines in saliva is fifty nanograms per milliliter.  Anything below this level can be considered a false positive for the use of amphetamines.  Some antidepressants can be mistaken for the use of amphetamines in routine drug screening.  The use of a Vicks inhaler can trigger a false positive for methamphetamine use.  Many over the counter cold medications that contain ephedrine and pseudoephedrine on a routine drug test but may be determined that the person was not using methamphetamines when the sample is scrutinized by more sophisticated spectrometry testing.  Many pharmacies across the country have moved some cold medicines back under direct pharmacists control because some of these cold medicines are used in the manufacturing of methamphetamines.

  Other prescribed medicines such as Adderall or Dextrostat that are used to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and ADHD with register a false positive on a saliva or urine test for amphetamines because they are actually amphetamines but prescribed legally.  Another popular drug which can test similar to amphetamines is ecstasy which is a processed form of amphetamine.  If a saliva swab test for amphetamines turns up positive then a further test will be conducted to determine if it is a false positive or not.
