Here is what we know so far. Alcohol is not as easily detected in hair drug tests as are many other drugs. Ethanol or alcohol is present in all hair including those of people who don’t drink alcohol at all. These alcohol deposits can be products of the environment. The alcohol hair follicle drug tests looks for direct products of ethanol/alcohol metabolism. Part of the alcohol reacts with fatty acids to produce esters and these are called fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) and these FAEE’s are used as indicators of the alcohol consumption. The amounts of FAEE’s found in the hair are measured in nano-grams. Currently, the best thinking on alcohol misuse is currently 60 grams per day or like binge drinking. So, about seven strong drinks a day would equal 56 grams of alcohol.  A 750ml bottle of wine with 13% alcohol by volume would contain about 78 grams of alcohol. Consumed alcohol is not deposited directly into the hair.
