Dilution versus Delusion Part 2
Low levels of creatinine in the urine are not the only reason that a sample may be rejected in a drug test. A diluted urine sample can be rejected because of the altered specific gravity of the sample due to excessive water intake. Because a lot of water has passed through the kidneys the specific gravity of the sample would be very close to that of pure water. Some people try to pass a drug test by drinking excessive amounts of water but this can be a dangerous proposition because drinking excessive amounts of water can be fatal. This is known as water intoxication and if the individual drinks more water that the body can process then it can affect the heart by reducing the correct level of electrolytes that the heart needs to function properly. If this happens then it can lead to swelling of the brain and ultimately death. That is too big a risk to take to pass a drug test.
When taking a urine test for the Department of Transportation, if a person submits a sample that is determined to be diluted then that person is required to immediately give a second sample while being directly observed. Retesting at a later date is up to the discretion of the testing facility depending upon the degree of dilution in the sample but if that is the case then it would not be a random test rather the subject would be re-tested using the same parameters as the first test.
