    Dilution versus Delusion Part 3

When taking a pre-employment drug test that does not fall under the umbrella of The Department of Transportation guidelines, it is up to the company doing the testing which course of action they will take with an applicant supplying a diluted sample.  Most companies follow the guidelines established by The Department of Transportation when it comes to drug testing applicants because of the precedent set by federal government. Usually one or two retests after an initial diluted urine sample are about all a company is willing to do for an applicant because the tests do cost money and in today’s economic climate there are more than enough qualified applicants to fill the position who will give clean, undiluted samples.

Most of the time a diluted sample provided by the job applicant is just the result of the person trying to lead a healthier lifestyle by drinking more water to lose weight and keep hydrated.  Once the process of dilution has been explained to the applicant then they will cut back on their water intake twenty four to forty eight hours before their test to ensure that their sample will be accepted.  Suspicions are raised when the applicant repeatedly gives a diluted sample and the testing facility suspects that they are trying to hide something.  Basically it boils down to a business decision for the company to keep spending money to retest an applicant time and time again or just to reject them based on the repeated diluted results and move on to the next applicant.
