Hair Follicle Testing: What You Need To Know
The detection time of certain drug metabolites like THC in a hair test is far greater than that of a urine test or a saliva test. For just a one time use the drug metabolite can be processed out of your blood, urine or saliva in just a few days, weeks or even up to a month depending on the substance. In the blood, urine or saliva the metabolites are processed out of your system by the liver and the kidneys. Not so with the hair. Your hair is a dead element which sits outside of the body and has no filtration system. Once the metabolites are deposited in the hair follicle they grow along the trajectory of the hair until they are physically removed by cutting the follicle. After your blood is clean then any new hair growth will be clean as well.
If you have taken your first hit of marijuana and you are told you must submit a hair sample for a test the following day this might not be the end of the world. You may still pass a drug test on short notice because the THC metabolites may not be present in your hair yet. It may take anywhere from seven to ten days to be detected in the hair follicle. It may take this long to be delivered by the bloodstream to the root of the hair follicle located at the base of the scalp. The key word here is “may”. Everybody has a different metabolism so this detection time may vary.
