• A little history on hair testing

  Hair testing became popular pretty recently. Back in 1960s and 70s they tested hair for the presence of toxic heavy metals like lead or mercury. The technology was still developing and wasn’t sensitive enough to detect such organic substances as drugs. Later on it was established that pollutants from the blood eventually enter into the hair shaft and stay there until the hair is cut off. This brought an idea of testing the hair structure to determine the presence of drugs – whether or not a person was exposed to certain organic substances in the past. The first hair drug test was performed around 1979: a group of scientists performed a chain of tests of heroine users. Radioimmunoassay showed correlation between the concentrations of morphine along the hair shaft with the time of rug usage. Nowadays, this technology reached new level and is being routinely used to detect a repetitive drug exposure as an alternative to urine and blood drug testing – these tests provide only short-term information on the history of drug use, whereas hair drug testing not only goes back several months, but also can differentiate between single drug exposure and chronic usage. This testing method is currently very popular in forensic science, occupational and traffic medicine, clinical toxicology and in sports. Considered as a fool-proof test, it eliminates all the possibilities of a topical drug application, not only because anything that can be applied to the hair would contain any illicit toxins, but also hair is being tested for the drug metabolites and not the toxins themselves, which would be possible only by consuming the substances internally. • Second Hand Smoke

  I recently received a phone call from a young lady who was worried about testing positive for marijuana on a urine test that she had to take for a job that she was applying for.

  She had recently attended a concert with some friends and the people who were sitting near them were smoking marijuana and she could smell it from where she was sitting.  Second hand marijuana smoke is capable of leaving traces of THC in your urine for a day or two but usually not enough to produce a positive test result since most drug tests have cut off concentration levels where a person will not test positive for marijuana if their level of THC metabolites is lower than the cut off level.  The cut off concentration levels for most marijuana urine tests is about 50ng/ml – that is 50 nanograms per milliliter. For example, this person would have to be in car or small room with no ventilation for a sustained period of time with so much smoke it would irritate the eyes for their body to inhale enough second hand smoke to reach this level.

  Staying in a well ventilated area while you are surrounded by pot or nicotine smokers is advisable if you don’t want to risk a positive results for any kind of tests including urine, hair, saliva or blood.

  You know drug tests are in high demand when you hear it being discussed on the radio.   So your employer is giving you a hair drug screening test today and you could be gone from your job tomorrow if you fail the test.  Employers use a hair drug screening test because it records toxins in the body over a long period of time.  Your hair follicle provides a measurement of drug molecules and their metabolites that have been introduced into the follicle by your bloodstream after your body has metabolized the particular substance.  Your hair grows approximately one quarter to one half inch per month but, like your metabolism, everyone’s rate of hair growth differs.

  The average hair drug screening test usually tries to cover a time period of about three months.  The sample is usually cut as close to the root as possible and on average is about one inch to one and one half inch in length. Fifty to seventy strands of hair are usually required and are taken from various locations on the scalp so as not to leave anyone with a huge bald spot after the sample is taken.

• “Special K”

  The use of recreational drugs always brings out the difference in opinions about it. • This Cannot Be Right

  A few days ago an older gentleman called in and was very upset.  It seems that his company had just instituted mandatory drug testing and he thought that he had no worries because he had never ingested an illegal drug in his entire life. The test results had come back and he tested positive for cocaine use. He was stunned.  There must have been some kind of mistake.

  There could be a few different reasons why he tested positive for cocaine. A false positive result for cocaine could be caused by the use of certain antibiotics like Amoxicillin or Ampicillin.  Tonic water has been found to cause a false positive in some cases.  Illnesses such as kidney disease or a kidney infection or liver disease or liver infection may also result in a positive test for cocaine.  Even diabetes has been linked to showing a positive test result for cocaine in urine testing.  Also some topical anesthetics

  may provide a false reading for cocaine.  Besides the above-mentioned reasons that the test results came back positive for cocaine there is always the possibility of human error in the lab doing the testing.  Mixing up the samples taken, mislabeling samples, incorrect paperwork and improper laboratory procedure are also possible reasons for failing the drug screening test.  In order to protect yourself from testing positive for something that you know you havenot done try to stay away from any over the counter drugs for up to seventy two hours before your test. You should also provide to the lab a complete list of any over the counter and prescription medicines that you may be taking at the time of your test and if you have diabetes, liver disease or kidney disease.

• Marijuana and Employment Testing

  -         What is the essence of life? You earn your living and get what you deserve – that is: if you work hard entire year you deserve a vacation, right?

  This conversation started pretty unusually and it was expected to get only more interesting:

  -         So, anyway, my wife and I went on the vacation to Holland. Have you heard about Amsterdam? It is like a heaven there! They got bars where you can drink, and they got bars where you can smoke! It is legal there and mostly everybody do it! I mean, what is the big deal!?

  Compared to US decriminalization laws, this European country is pretty advanced.

  -         We had awesome time there, and I cannot wait to my next vacation because that is where I am going! But – life is life – I was reminded of this cruel reality as soon as I came back – I had a drug test at my work! I mean, I was back only for two days, and they test me!? Unbelievable! Of course I came up positive, but what the heck – I am allowed to do what I want, especially if it is legal, right?

  -         Yes, but it also legal for your company to drug test you whenever they want, especially if it is in your contract. And since it is illegal in this country, it may be used as ground for your termination.

  -         Yeah, that is the thing! They said they do not care if it was legal where I smoked it and if I want to work there I have to be clean by next week! What do you have for me? Come on, anything to pass that freaking test!

  Employers and the law sometimes stand apart – in most cases even medical marijuana users need a clean sample in order to get a job. Keeping your private life separate from your business life can be crucial in maintaining a career.

  I was just reading and article the other day in a news paper about people complaining about workplace drug testing and sporadic drug testing at the place of employment. Well there are many reasons for this.
