    Not a reason to worry

When looking for a new opportunity while job hunting, we always keep a note of that one little thing that can be harder than getting through an interview – a pre-employment drug test. Everybody does it, and every day the number of positions one can acquire that does not involve drug testing decreases very fast.

    -         Yes, hi. I have a somewhat not standard question for you. I actually got your product already, and I had my interview two weeks ago, and I got the job and in fact already started a couple days ago, but the thing that I am concerned about – they did not tell me when my test is! Do you think they can do a random test after I started working now?

    -         Did they specify that you need to pass a pre-employment test or did they say that you will be subject to random testing all through the time you will be working for them?

    -         I was told that it is a pre-employment drug testing.

    -         In that case you will be informed prior to your test; they should not put you on a spot.

    -         Shall I be concerned? I am kind of worried…

    -         No, there is no reason. It can just happen so that they won’t do the test at all! Many small companies scare away the potential employees that cannot or do not want to undergo a mandatory drug test, but once they are ensured that you are a good enough candidate – they can hire you and just “skip” the test altogether.

    -         Oh, I see. So they won’t do a random test all of a sudden?

    -         No. If you were warned about a scheduled pre-employment but not a random test, they cannot pull you out of the office whenever they want – they have to let you know in advance.

    -         Ok, sounds good. I will hold on to the product just in case then. Thank you very much!
