    What should be done if…

Passing a drug test is not the easiest thing to do, but a quite possible one. But what happens after you passed it? You got the job, and started smoking again (or drinking, or whatever is your preference) – you should keep in mind that supervisors and managers have their own policy and action steps they need to take in the case of an employee who appears to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances or drugs. Rules and regulations require certain actions taken after it is determined that a person is under the influence:

    1. Consult with another manager or supervisor, and escort the employee to the supervisor’s office.

    2. Before asking the questions indicated in the handbook (“Questions for Suspected Alcoholic or Substance Users”), make sure that there is a witness to the investigation.

    3. Complete the “Observation Checklist” (this is where the manager would check the appropriate description for person’s movements, walking, talking, general demeanor, appearance and clothing, anything particular about eyes, face, breath, etc.)

    4. Ask the employee for permission to conduct basic on-site Coordination Examination.

    5. After this it should be easy to determine whether or not an employee is under the influence of any substances. The person may either return to his or her work station, or be accompanied home.

    6. Arrange for a physical examination of drug/alcohol testing as soon as possible, if it was previously determined that an employee more than likely was a subject to using illicit substances at work.

Note: During the entire process, careful notes should be taken for future references and documentation.
