Drug Testing Facts
The reason why people need to know about drug testing facts is that the US Laws make it compulsory for public employees to undergo drug testing on a periodic basis. The same compulsion has been adapted by certain private employers. The legislation in question is the Drug Free Workplace Act 1988. Another reason is that substances included in the legal definition of drugs are present as ingredients in numerous over the counter drugs. What completes the recipe for a potential disaster, intentional or non intentional, is the fact that many drug testing techniques are not very accurate. The detection of these banned substances in a person may possibly lead to loss of job, not to mention the embarrassment and demoralization.
Drug testing is the process of determining the presence or the absence of certain substances within a person’s body. Public and private employers have been routinely conducting drug testing on their employees. The objective is to maintain a healthy workforce and work environment and to minimize conflicts and accidents.
Facts about drug testing:
Drug Testing is usually done for a minimum of ten drugs. These include cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy, barbiturate, benzodiazepine, opiate, amphetamine, methadone, methamphetamine and phencyclidine.
Methods employed for drug testing are usually four. These are blood test, urine test, saliva test and hair test. Of all the above four, a combination of blood and urine test is regarded as the most reliable, although each has its own merits and demerits.
Blood test determines the exact amount of drug in the blood stream at the time of the test.
Urine test determines the type of drug, although it is not capable of determining the amount and time of drug consumption.
Saliva test can detect the presence of a drug consumed only a few days before the test. This test does not require any sophisticated facilities like a lab – it can be conducted on the spot with a detection kit.
Hair test is typically employed to detect the use of drugs within the last 90 days. However this test is not capable to detect the drugs consumed one week before the test.
Certain methods can help you pass a drug test. These include:
Use of detoxifiers.
Avoiding toxic substances and toxic environment.
Proper exercise, diet and water consumption from one week before the test.
