Marijuana Hair Follicle Test

Drug Tests determine the presence or absence of drugs in the human body. They are being increasingly employed by employers, school and college authorities, landlords, other authorities and parents to check drug consumption by employees, students, tenants, vendors and wards. The urine drug test is the most common drug test. Other drug tests are blood test, saliva test, sweat test / analysis and the hair follicle drug test.

The hair test is being increasingly used due to its obvious advantages over other drug tests. One, it does not involve the humiliating spectacle of collecting blood, urine, saliva or sweat sample. Some people get embarrassed when they are asked to provide sample – regarding the same as being accused. The hair test merely requires the collection of one strand of hair from any part of the body. This is especially convenient for parents who want to check their wards use / non use of drugs without the ward knowing it.

Second, the test is more accurate and can trace drug consumption patterns for at least 90 days before the test was conducted. Advanced versions of the test can go back even further. For e.g. hair drug test can trace marijuana consumption in the last three years. Compare this with urine test that can trace the same in the last 10 days, 45 days and 90 days respectively for occasional users, regular users and chronic users. Blood tests trace the same for a period of 12 – 24 hours and 2 – 7 days for occasional and regular users respectively. Saliva tests can trace consumption of marijuana in the previous 24 hours only.

Drug consumption leaves behind residues in the inner layers of the hair in addition to other body fluids. These residues grow as the consumption increases. Since the residue is present inside the hair it is difficult to tamper with and therefore this test is more accurate. However, even this drug test can be passed with proper application of cleaner or masking shampoos. Drug testing dissolves the outer layer of the hair and test the inner layers for drug residues. Masking shampoos open the outermost layer – the cuticle and seal the inner layers with a sealant that is insoluble in any known solvent. This effectively prevents detection of drug residues, if any.
