• Urine Drug Testing 101

  We receive a lot of phone calls from people who have never had to take a drug test before and want some information on what to expect.  The most common type of drug test that companies require today would be testing the urine for drugs.  This seems to be the most cost-effective and accurate method for companies to determine if their employees are using drugs.  Many companies also require employees or prospective employees to provide blood, saliva or hair samples as well as or in place of urine to be sent to labs and tested for the presence of illegal substances.

  Most companies will send employees to a collection site where the lab will collect the specimen, usually about two ounces.  Some labs will just provide you with a cup, show you where the bathroom is and wait for you to provide your sample.  Other companies might require that you be observed while you provide your sample. The bathrooms in testing labs often only contain the toilet with the water dyed blue so you can’t dilute your sample in the toilet water.  Some may not even contain a sink.

  There are a few guidelines which labs use to test your urine.  The temperature is measured as soon as you turn in your sample and if measures colder than the required 92 degrees it is an automatic fail. Once you’ve passed the temperature test your day at the lab is done.

  There are three different stages in a typical urine test.

  The first is physical examination of the sample where it is tested for color, specific gravity, clarity and concentration.

  The second is a chemical examination where it is tested for specific illegal drugs or substances.

  The third stage is a microscopic examination of the sample to identify cells, casts and other components like mucous and batteries.

  The color of the urine can be affected by many things like the balance of fluid in your system, your diet, disease and medicines.  Blood in the urine can turn your urine red-brown and some berries and vegetables can affect the color as anyone who has ever eaten asparagus can attest to.  Urine is normally clear but mucous, blood, crystals and bacteria can turn your urine cloudy.

  The specific gravity test of the sample reveals the amount of substances in the urine as well as how the kidneys balance the amount of water in the urine.  Drinking a large amount of fluids makes your kidneys produce urine with a high amount of water in it producing a low reading for specific gravity.  Conversely, when you do not drink enough fluids, your kidneys make urine with a small amount of water in it producing a sample with a high specific gravity.

  Getting your results can vary from lab to lab.  Some labs may do the dip test immediately and you will know the results before you leave.  Some labs may notify you within 24 to 48 hours or some may notify your employer before notifying you.  Some labs may not even notify you if your test is negative and after a few weeks have passed you can assume that you have passed.  But if you have tested positive you can be sure that someone will let you know within a few days.

  How long does it take to get clean? Abstaining for weeks, drinking loads of water, working out – does that all fit in your schedule? But what if you don’t want to quit?   Japanese physicians have been recommending drinking at least 2 liters of water a day to keep your body hydrated. However, they never realized this could keep your urine dilute. Not only would this be a bad result for medical testing of urine but it could cost you a job you’re seeking or the one you carry now. Dilution has been an issue in urine testing for a few decades now.

  Rules have changed in the drug testing war and now if you have a dilute reading your automatically bared from employment or considered guilty of masking and using drugs which will either have you fired or not given the job.

  To all of you health wise people out there and to those who cannot handle harsh hot weather beware. I myself drink a lot of water each day and have tested myself and come up either dilute or had inconclusive results due to the water intake I have on a daily basis. This is just to keep me hydrated. Not too fair huh? Well luckily my boss understands and knows by other testing methods I am clean.

  So in this situation you are doing nothing and are an “innocent bystander” or you are guilty as sin and trying to give a clean specimen by diluting. You’re still going to get a negative response. • Why Dilution is a Bad Idea

  So here you are, facing a drug test in a few days and deciding on what to do about it. Somebody told you to drink a lot of water, your friend said pickle and cranberry juices are the best things since sliced bread, and somebody else mentioned a failed diluted sample, so now you at a loss. Well, let’s review.

  When drinking a lot of  water, cranberry juice and so on, your kidneys speed up the secretion of water from you body, so you urinate more often and get a false impression that the urine is getting cleansed. The technical term for this procedure is “over-hydration” which dilutes the drug metabolites concentration in the urine sample and with that it will lower the creatinine – a substance that is constantly excreted into urine as a by-product of muscles’ metabolism. When creatinine level is low, it arouses the suspicion of a tempered sample, and they might do a check for gravity of a sample as well. The specific gravity is a proportion between the concentrations of dissolved solids (like salt) for a measurement of urine. When the sample is diluted with water, specific gravity reading is below the standard, thus confirming the alarming low creatinine levels and the sample is refused “tampered.”

  Before I had mentioned about hair testing and the average time it takes for hair to grow, how long it has to be and how the toxins evolve in the hair. I have recently done some more research and found more solid information and that different spots on your head grow faster then others and this is why labs take from specific spots on the scalp.

  So when it comes to the head the crown region has been shown to grow the fastest and that is where labs typically take the hair from. It usually grows on average ½ inch per month which explains the need for 1 and ½ inches to be collected so they can test for the normal 90 day period.

  Now they have been testing other body hair as well. So for future references when you purchase a Detox Shampoo be sure to get enough for your body as well. • Prescription Medication – what to do?

  What is the employers concern about the illicit drug use? Do they care if you use now or you had a history in the past? As we know, hair or nail testing can go back a long time, but if you stopped now and have been clean for a long time – why should they care about your past experiences? And what if you are taking prescription medications – do you really have to disclose it to your employer before getting ready to pass a drug test? Certain psychological disorders, e.g. depression, schizophrenia, and even alcoholism and drug addiction, are considered to be disabilities, so if your employer finds out that you are taking prescribed xanax, for instance, they might not hire you. However, back in 1990 ADA (American Disabilities Act) was endorsed for protection of disabled people in a workplace. This act makes it illegal to test for prescription drugs and nosing through your medical history – some information found can be used in discriminating against you. Also, if you are recovered or recovering drug addict or alcoholic, an employer does not have the right to access that information neither.

  Going back to current and past use – the ADA makes a clear distinction what is past and what is present, and what is legal and what is not. Clearly, disability is represented by an illicit drug use in the past by a drug addict, or a current prescribed drug use under the supervision of a physician; current illicit drug use is not a disability and is not protected by the ADA, as well as casual illicit drug use in the past.

• Radioimmunoassay i.e. Saliva testing

  Radioimmunoassay is the testing done on saliva to see if there are toxins in your spit or not. This has been a very successful and proven way to drug test for any and all toxins. This test is so strategic that it can test positive with a few hours of using a toxin to weeks after using a toxin.

  Not too many informational sites have this information available to view. However, this test was originated for other medical issues such as testing the insulin level of a diabetic to other sorts of infections.

  The purpose of this test is to look closer to the saliva and see what toxins cling to the saliva. All toxins and medical problems can be detected through saliva permitting they are in your blood stream. For example if you smoked THC/Marijuana 2 days ago this will show in your saliva. If you smoked 2 hours before a saliva test the results will be positive for THC and very high contents.

  Some people fail because they think brushing there teeth before they go helps. First problem is most people who brush there teeth make there gums bleed. Blood will show more then a little THC it will show a lot more. Second most people who brush there teeth use mouth wash. Mouth wash will show positive for alcohol consumption and you will most likely be given a breathalyzer next.

  Now before panicking there are a few saliva detox products out there such as a 7 day cleansing program that will do a complete detox and mouth washes that coat the mouth so when the test is administered the device will only get the product not your actual saliva. If it does indeed get your saliva the product is strong enough to still give a negative toxin screen which means your as good as gold.

• More About Sweat Test

  Do you know what is the most intrusive drug test ever? It takes the most of your time and is impossible to pass unless you are completely clean. If you guessed “sweat test” – you guessed it right. Not the most precise test, but accurate enough and definitely a fool-proof. They stick a patch on your body and you have to wear for one full week (at least). It looks like an oversized band-aid, but the plastic is made from the special material, and if you take it off during the week, they will know and you will simply fail the test.

  The only way to beat this test is to stop using and to cleanse out your body completely and permanently.
