Read about false positive marijuana test.
A false positive is defined as a drug free sample false being reported as showing a positive for drugs in a drug screening. A false positive can occur because of a number of reasons which includes improper laboratory processes and procedures, incorrect paper work, mixing up samples, inept authorities and passive inhalation/second hand smoke. But the most common reason for the occurrence of false positive is cross reactants. A cross reactant is basically a substance which has a similar chemical structure as a drug or its metabolites and that can cause a false positive. One hit of weed drug test can also give a false positive result.
A number of substances can result in cross reactivity on an immunoassay screen but are not likely to mistaken a GC/MC test. That is why one must always ask for a confirmatory test if they get a false positive so as to pass drug test. A number of medications, over the counter medicines and food supplements can cause a false positive. Poppy seeds are a famous example. Poppy seeds that are generally found on bread contain traces of morphine that can test one positive for opiates. Codeine which is found in many pain relievers can test one positive for the same.
Ibuprofen is a common pain reliever which can even in low doses can cause a false positive for marijuana/ cannabis on the EMIT tests. Thus there have been some changes made to use a different enzyme to eliminate these false positives. Melanin, a pigment which protects skin and hair from UV rays has a similar chemical structure to THC, the psychoactive ingredient of marijuana. Some data claims that melanin thus can cause a false positive for cannabis. However another data suggests that there is no link whatsoever.
A small fraction of population excrete large amount of certain enzymes in their urine that can test them positive. Second hand smoke can also be the reason of failing a drug test wherein an innocent comes in contact with the smokers and inhale the harmful metabolites. Main nasal sprays and products used by asthmatic patients can also cause a false positive.s
