Drug testing came into picture after it was made mandatory for the federal employees in 1980 in United States. After that many private companies and schools have adopted a drug testing policies to ensure a drug free atmosphere. Nowadays, employers believe that employment drug testing is a necessary requirement for their companies. A recent survey reported that majority of 500 Fortune companies conduct employee drug screening. It is estimated that the use of illegal drugs in the workplace costs the employers around $100 billion dollars per year by the labor department of US. There are much other expenditure like the compensation to the workers, health expenses and lost work time.
Pre employment drug testing is a must as the employers have the right to conduct the test to develop a productive and healthy workplace as long as it is in the line of federal and state laws. Drug screening is often conducted in the workplace to monitor drug and alcohol abuse by the staff. Many companies believe that random drug tests are the best ways to catch hold of the drug users. It is an obligatory duty of the employers to provide a drug free environment and the best way to do so is to screen out the substance abusers before they get hired and work as potential employees.
There are many independent physicians to check the drug test results. If at all an employee tests positive then the physician contacts the applicant to find out whether there is a medical reason behind the positive test result. In case of positives, the subjects have the right to decide whether to re-test their specimens in the lab of their own choice. There are several cases when the test comes out to be negative but shows some abnormal findings which indicates that the subject is using synthetic urine to pass a drug test or have attempted to tamper the findings by drinking excessive water. The labs have the right to ask for another sample. Failing to pass a drug test can be grounds for many negative impacts like suspension or termination. The job opportunity is lost for those who tests positive in the pre employment drug test. Pre employment drug test plays an important role in promoting a healthy environment!
