Drug testing acts as a method of screening students and avoiding them from drug use. Thus drug testing has become quite popular in many school systems. According to the Governmental statistics, there is a steady increase in number of drug use amongst the teenagers every year. Fear of facing throwing out from school or punishment from their parents may be a good restriction for high school students.
Most of the drug testing requires the consent of the parent or it can be only requested in case of suspicion. Drug test is compulsory for any students who wish to take part in any sport because of the fact that male athlete have a greater risk of drug abuse. In case of possession of drug, the students are suspended from school or sent to drug rehabilitation centers. Many educational experts believe that high school drug testing deters the students from drug abuse.
Drug and alcohol use by students is a rising problem. Let us now have a look at the statistics:1.Use of marijuana: It is shocking that the use of marijuana is found to be 10.9% amongst 8th graders, 23.9% amongst 10th graders and 32% amongst 12th graders.
2.Use of vicodin: 2.7% of 8yh grader, 7.2% of 10th graders and 9.6% of 12th graders.
3.1.8% of 8th graders, 3.9% of 10th graders and 5.2% of 12th graders had abused OxyContin for nonmedical purposes.
4.Teens that drink are 50 times more likely to use cocaine than teens who never consume alcohol.
5.60% of the teens accepted the fact that drugs were sold and used in their schools.
6.15 percent of 10th and 12th graders have used amphetamines.
Research shows that students choose this dreadful path in order to cope with their family problems and the increasing pressure from peers. Raising drug free children is one of the major issues in today’s society. Communication is a powerful mean at our disposal that can keep our kids off drugs. We must set some societal norms as parents. We must make our children aware of the dangers of drugs.
