Urine Drug Testing Possible False Positive.
False positive is a condition when a person who does not consume drugs tests positive in a drug test. This happens when the person consumes certain medicines or foodstuffs that trigger a positive test. This condition is another beating stick in the hands of those who oppose the compulsory nature of drug tests in workplaces, schools, colleges and rented accommodations and other places. Their contention that such results can lead to unfair harassment and even unfair termination, are not completely unfounded.
There are a number of medicines and foodstuffs that can lead to a possible false positive result in urine drug test. For e.g. eating poppy seeds can lead to a false positive test for cocaine. Other elements that can give a false positive test for cocaine include liver infections and liver disease, kidney infection, diabetes, Amoxicillin and tonic water. Then there are medicines and conditions that can possibly cause a false positive for THC in a urine drug test. THC is tetra hydro cannabinol and is the psychoactive substance in marijuana. The list of false positive promoters include Riboflavin (B2, Hempseed Oil), Ketoprofen (Orudis KT), Dronabinol (Marinol), Naproxen (Aleve), Ibuprofen (Excedrin IB, Advil, Motrin, Nuprin etc.), Promethazine (Promethegan, Phenergan), liver disease, kidney infection or kidney disease and diabetes.
The fear of testing positive has led to people trying many techniques to pass the test. Some of these methods are based on science and are effective while others are debatable. Some are pure nonsense and can even get you killed. For e.g. drinking bleach is said to help you pass the urine test. This is not only a lie but can also get you killed if you drink a substantial amount of bleach. Using niacin drug test is a debatable method. Niacin is vitamin B3 and is used to hasten metabolism and break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates. This action does eliminate marijuana and other toxins. However there is no scientific evidence to suggest that niacin helps pass a drug test. It may work occasionally, but the result is not guaranteed. Plus you are putting yourself at the risk of side effects like a feeling of skin flushing and warmth, itches, rashes, gastrointestinal problems and even liver complications.
