Creatine Levels On A Drug Test

Creatinine is a product of creatine phosphate in muscle. This is produced by the body at a constant rate depending upon the muscles. The muscle metabolism gives rise to a chemical waste called the creatinine. Creatinine takes up almost 2% of creatine which is converted daily. The blood takes the creatinine to the kidneys, where the kidneys filter out the creatinine and drains it out through urine. The level of creatinine in the blood in general remains constant because the muscle mass of the body does not change on a daily basis.

The kidneys take care of the level of creatinine in the blood. It helps to keep the level to a normal range. So, if the kidneys become impaired for any reason that would definitely lead to the rise in the creatinine level. However creatinine levels may also rise due to many drugs.

Chemotherapy drugs like Cisplatin, Carmustine causes damage to the kidneys and therefore increase the creatinine level in the body. So, it is advisable that if patients are receiving this drug, it should definitely be taken care of that the kidneys can handle the intake of the drug. There are various antibiotics like Amphotercin B, Vancomycin also causes rise in the level of creatinine by causing damage to the kidneys. Enzymes given to patients after heart attack like ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitors makes the blood vessels become larger in the heart, and lowers the blood pressure. So, patients with impaired kidneys are asked to avoid this inhibitor. Drugs that relieve us from pain like Motrin (ibuprofen), aspirin can play instrumental in causing kidney damage. Kidney damage, though, is listed as the side effect of these pain killers, this might eventually lead to the increase in the creatinine level.

0.6 to 1.2 milligrams per deciliter is the normal range of creatinine in blood for adults (males). For females however the range is 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dl. It might so happen that one may suffer from kidney damage and have high level of creatinine, but no symptoms catch our eyes. Symptoms of increased level of creatinine in blood include feeling dehydrated, fatigue, confusion and shortness in breath.

Creatinine levels drug test is performed to check the Creatinine level in blood. There are many drugs that cause the level of creatinine to rise. For this, test is done along with a BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) test to check the condition of the kidneys.
