Read about false positive drug test results workplace.
Employers have the right to expect their employees not to be high, drunk or stoned. The main priority in any company is the performance of the employees. Job performance of an employee is the bottom line; if an employee fails to perform and there is a loss of productivity the employer has the right to fire him/her. Drug test for military officials is obligatory with marijuana military drug test being the most familiar one. Military has a zero tolerance for drugs. Drug testing can come up in several forms. The most accurate one is the hair follicle drug test. Urinalysis fails to measure the job performance of an employee. Even if it is a confirmed positive, it provides no evidence of the present impairment, it will only indicate that the subject has been using drugs or might have taken some amount in the past
Unfortunately not all the drug testing methods are reliable with many of the newer techniques yield a large number of false positives. A false positive is a case when a drug screens appear to show the use of illicit drugs wherein in reality it wasn’t used it is just a case of mistaken identity. A large number of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and some food stuffs can cause a positive result even though the subject did not consume any kind of drug. This unreliability of many drug testing procedures is a matter of great concern when the jobs of the employees are at stake and the negative consequences if one fails to pass a drug test are so dreadful.
The drug testing procedures of many companies are not reliable and the employees have to face suspension or even termination if they register a false positive. Approximately, all the drug tests in companies yield at least 10% false positives and possibly 30% of times. Although more accurate testing methods are available but they being expensive are not preferred by many employers. Even the most accurate tests can yield inaccurate results because of some lab errors. A survey recently found that 20% of the labs that were surveyed reported false positives in drug free urine specimens. Thus the drug testing for employees have become a controversial issue with employees not liking the idea of the test when there are such great chances of false positives.
