Over the Counter Drug Tests.
Drug Testing is the process of checking for the residues of drugs inside a person’s body in order to determine if the person is a user of drugs. These tests are named after the sample that they use to scan for traces of drugs. Thus we have the urine drug test, blood test, saliva test, sweat analysis and the hair follicle test. The urine test is the most common while the hair test is the most accurate. It is most difficult to pass a saliva drug test if you are a user of drugs.
The Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988 made drug Tests compulsory for public employees. Other private authorities voluntarily adopted the same later. The fear of testing positive or actually testing positive is known to discourage the practice of drug use in existing and potential users. This is the spirit behind instituting drug tests. But the issue is not that simple. A false positive is a condition when a person tests positive in a drug test even if he does not consume drugs. This is a result of consuming certain foodstuffs and over the counter medicines. Many over the counter medicines are modified to produce crystal meth – a form of methamphetamine that acts as a powerful narcotic. This adds an element of precariousness to this issue and makes it more debatable. Furthermore, people know how to pass a drug test when they know the date of the test in advance. Thus people can pass a urine test with certo products.
Over the counter medicines that can cause a drug test to give false positive results include Riboflavin (B2, Hempseed Oil), Naproxen (Aleve), Dronabinol (Marinol), Ketoprofen (Orudis KT), Promethazine (Phenergan, Promethegan), Ibuprofen (Advil, Nuprin, Excedrin IB, Motrin etc.) and medicines for kidney disease or kidney infection, liver disease and diabetes. These will give false positives for THC i.e. marijuana drug test. Eating poppy seeds, tonic water and medicines for kidney disease, liver disease and diabetes can cause a false positive for cocaine. This is fairly serious as testing positive in an employment drug test can lead to loss of job. Therefore it is advisable to use all medicines under prescription only and submitting the prescription before the drug test.
