Second Hand Drug Test.
The debate on drug tests has become bitter and acrimonious. There are rumors around that passive smoking of the fumes of a drug directly smoked by someone else will get you tested positive in a drug test. This is what is referred to as testing positive in a second hand drug test. There is more myth in this statement than there is substance. Testing positive due to drugs smoked by someone else is a very remote possibility.
For a person to test false positive marijuana test due to passive smoking is very difficult. There is this common belief, but there is very little reality in it. The belief rests on the premise that the smoke will be inhaled to such a degree that it will be reflected in a drug test conducted within a short duration of this phase of passive smoking. For such a thing to happen the person needs to be in a room with such a thick smoke of marijuana that goggles will be needed to prevent any damage to the eyes. Much also depends on the cut off level set by the employer in the drug test. Usually employers set a fairly high bar in the drug test for the amount of traces that are regarded as tolerable. It is only beyond this level that the traces are considered to be a positive test. For e.g. the cut off level of the Department of Transportation for truckers and other drivers in safety sensitive jobs is 50 nano gram per milliliter of urine (1 nano gram is one billionth of a gram). This is a very liberal level considering that the NFL has set the bar at 15 nano grams per ml of urine.
There has even been a case when Ross Rebagliati regained his snowboarding gold in 1998 when he contested and won the case wherein he was stripped of his gold medal for testing positive. It was proved that he had tested positive because of second hand smoke. What this means that such a thing is possible. But the possibility is remote. And the pace at which science is making progress, very soon we may even have a method to check if a positive result is genuine or secondary.
