Native to Indonesia and South India, Turmeric is a plant whose root is a common ingredient found in Indian food. It has a bright orange color, a strong aroma and tastes somewhat like pepper. It has been traditionally used as a condiment, as an aromatic stimulant, and even a dye used in textiles. It has been used by some cultures as medicine to treat ulcers, skin diseases inflammation of the joints, cold and flu symptoms, and to help with digestion. An extract from Turmeric root called curcumin is what gives the spice turmeric its yellow color and has been found to have potential health benefits.
