    Drug Test Adulteration

    Read about drug test adulteration.

Drug testing is done to determine the presence or absence of illegal drugs in the system of the subject. Immunoassay drug tests are generally used for quick screening of the drugs in urine, hair, saliva or blood. The drug tests generally screens for the presence of the most commonly abused drugs like marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, PCP, methadone, barbiturates and propoxyphene. When one tests positive in an immunoassay screen, then positive is confirmed by GC/MS. With the drug testing becoming popular, many websites now provides tips for passing a drug test

In 1986, under Reagan administration, an order was issued which directed all the federal agencies to achieve a drug free workplace. This is when drug testing came into picture. NIDA developed the guidelines for drug testing. The mandated drug testing procedure included the collection of specimens, the custody process and then the analysis of the sample obtained. The drug testing programs in US are federally mandated or sometimes not mandated. The private companies that are not mandated now have instituted employee screening programs to ensure a drug free workplace.

The abusers have started thinking of ways to cheat a drug test. They are con experts and are pretty aware of the entire testing procedure. One of the common practices used by them is adulteration. Abusers now challenge their drug testing by adding adulterants to the urine samples. Adulterants can cause false negative results for drug tests by interfering with the immunoassay screens. The most common adulterant used by abusers to try and evade a drug tests are:

    A. Vinegar
    B. Table salt (sodium chloride)
    C. Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
    D. Lemon juice (concentrated)
    E. Visine eye drops
    F. Goldenseal tea.

Vinegar as well as concentrated lemon juice is believed to interfere with the pH of the urine sample making the urine acidic. But the labs now perform a sample integrity test which checks the pH level of the urine. The table salt can increase the specific gravity of the urine which can also be detected. One should be careful before adopting these tactics as there is a danger of getting caught. Getting caught can lead a number of dreadful consequences!
