    Drug Test System

    Drug test system

Major uses of drug testing are to detect the presence of performance enhancing steroids in sport or for drugs prohibited by law like cocaine and heroin. The different types of drugs are tested in a very similar manner. One of the first steps for all drug tests is to make the sample testable. Urine and oral fluids can be used as they are for the tests but some tests require the drugs to be extracted first from the urine. Similarly, strands of hair and blood must be prepared before testing. Hair is to be washed to remove any second-hand sources of drug on the surface of hair. Blood plasma also needs to be separated from blood cells before putting it to test. After a suspected positive sample is detected, it is then flagged and tested for the confirmation test. Samples that are negative at the screening are rejected and reported negative.

The different types of random drug testing are:

    Urine drug screen

When an employer requests a drug test from an employee, is initially instructed to go to a collection site. The employee’s urine is collected in a specially designed secure cup, sealed with a tamper resistant tape, and sent via express delivery service to a testing laboratory to be screened for drugs (typically SAMHSA 5 panel).

    Hair testing

Scrutiny of hair samples has many advantages as a preliminary screening method for the presence of drugs. The advantages of hair analysis include the non-interfering, low cost and the ability to measure a large number of, possibly related, toxic and biologically essential elements. Especially in the United States hair testing is increasingly being used by employers to test employees for potential illegal drug consumption.

    Random drug testing

Random drug testing is used by a growing number of corporations, drug rehab centers, prisons, the military, police and fire departments, government agencies, and more recently, schools. It may also be used on teens by their parents, and in some countries can be mandatory to be performed at school. The objective of a random drug test is protection, as the threat of detection is much higher versus other testing methods.

    Sweat drug screen

Sweat tests are patches attached to the skin to collect sweat over a long period of time (1-4 Hours). These are almost exclusively used by child protective services, parole departments and other government institutions concerned with drug use over long periods, when urine testing is not practical.
