Drug Testing Labs
Drug testing is the procedure of determining drug use / non-use by the person who is being tested. The Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988 made drug testing compulsory for all public employees. Others followed cue and soon private workplaces and school and colleges were conducting drug tests. Quite naturally, the activity of drug testing labs increased proportionally. The standard of drug testing labs is an important consideration while choosing one. A sub standard lab can give incorrect results and lead to seriously negative consequences for the professional career or the academic record of a person(s).
Drug tests are supposed to discourage drug use. Failure in a drug test can mean loss of job, suspension from school / college, eviction from rented premises or cancellation of sporting records. The fear of these consequences does discourage drug use by potential and existing drug users. The objective is noble, but the implementation leaves much to be desired, more so if the drug testing lab is of the sub standard variety. Sometimes even non-users test positive. This condition is called as a false positive test result, and is triggered due to consumption of certain medicines and foodstuffs in certain duration before the test. For e.g. Ibuprofen is likely to show up as tetra hydro cannabinol (THC – the psychoactive element in marijuana) in a urine test for marijuana.
Out of the 1200 or so drug testing labs in the United States, only around 100 meet federal standards. When a person tests positive in the first test, a second test – the confirmatory test is conducted. A standard lab will be able to differentiate between a genuine positive and a false positive result. A sub standard lab is more likely to give the wrong result. When you consider the consequences of a positive test, including false positives, the gravity of the issue is likely to strike you. A person can lose his job or get suspended from school / college for a mistake that he / she has not made. So if a drug test is coming up in your office, school or college then make it a point to stay away from all those foods and medicines that are likely to give a false positive test.
