False Positives on Drug Tests.
False Positive on Drug Tests occurs when a person tests positive in a drug test even when he or she is not a consumer of drugs. This can happen due to three main reasons – the consumption of certain foodstuffs and medicines before the test, drug testing conducted by a sub standard lab or contamination of the sample during testing and transportation. Both ways the situation is serious enough to merit a thorough discussion. This is so as testing positive can lead to job loss and all the related embarrassment.
Drug Testing was made compulsory for public employees by the Drug Free workplace Act of 1988. Realizing that drug testing does discourage drug use, many other private authorities also voluntarily adopted the practice of drug test. This in turn led to a proliferation of drug testing labs. According to one estimate, only 120 out of the 1000 drug testing labs in the United States are FDA approved. False positives can occur during all tests including in the unine drug test which is the most common of the drug tests. It is most likely to occur due to the consumption of certain over the counter medicines. Painkillers are the most notorious in this regard. The following will show as THC (tetra hydro cannabinol) in a drug test: Naproxen (Aleve), Ketoprofen (Orudis KT), Dronabinol (Marinol), Riboflavin (B2, Hempseed Oil), Ibuprofen (Advil, Excedrin IB, Nuprin, Motrin etc.), Ketoprofen (Orudis KT), diabetes, liver disease, kidney infection and kidney disease.
This aspect of drug tests has been contentious and has caused a lot of litigation. Employees usually claim contamination of the sample during transport and testing as a reason for the positive result. Even under laboratory conditions contamination is possible. Still, others claim consumption of foodstuffs and medicines as the reason for this. Good quality labs divide the sample into two and conduct another test in case the first gives a positive result that is contested by the person under test. In most cases a false positive will mean a retest under more careful conditions. And in the worst case it can lead to loss of job.
