Many supporters of random drug testing in schools believe that it helps deter the students from doing drugs and overweighs all the legal justifications against it. Random drug tests in schools are a clear violation of privacy of the students. The incidences of substance abuse among the teens remain high. Therefore, the problem of drug use remains while the ethical still continue to battle with the legal.
Drug testing within the public and private schools has been debated ever since its introduction. There are several pros and cons about random public school drug testing. The controversy is right from the basic issue of privacy to the students to whether the drug testing is an effective deterrent to drug use. The moral and legal controversy over mandatory drug testing in schools is a valid debate. Many school administrators hesitate to perform random checks because the test interferes with an individual’s right to the presumption of innocence and the right to be free from all the unwarranted searches. Despite all the drug prevention programs, the use of illegal drug is high among the school going teens.
Drug testing in school can however reduce the drug use as the students might realize that they are monitored by the school officials. They would then hesitate in doing drugs. However a drug testing protocol creates a feeling in the minds of the students that their civil liberties are at risk. Parents are required to cooperate with the administrators to monitor the warning signs of drug abuse without any hesitation. All the drug testing methods are not accurate these days. The authorities need to be more stringent when it comes to random drug testing and ensure that there is no loophole in the procedure.
